The number of laboratory-confirmed deaths due to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) surpassed the barrier of 4,000 cases, according to the African nation's National Institute of Public Health in an official report released by the Xinhua news agency.
According to the epidemiological balance sheet, confirmed deaths amount to 4,018 out of a total of 8,300 infections registered nationwide, bringing the mortality rate to 48.4%. The infectious outbreak, which was formally declared by the health authorities on May 15, currently keeps 842 hospitalized patients under strict medical observation due to the presence of active symptoms.
In addition, health institutions reported that epidemiological response teams maintain a contact tracing deployment that reaches 80.6% of exposed people, with the objective of containing the chain of transmission in affected areas.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the Congolese Government and public health agencies are reinforcing medical care and biosafety protocols in healthcare centers, ratifying their commitment to safeguarding the health of the people and mitigating the impact of the health emergency in the region.
