Commander Fausto: Firmness, Conviction and Loyalty to the Bolivarian Revolution (+seeding)

On November 19, 2018, Commander Fausto, Ali Rodríguez Araque, died at 81 years of age in the Republic of Cuba.

Born in Mérida on September 9, 1937, Rodríguez Araque was a well-known Venezuelan lawyer, political leader and diplomat, who graduated from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) in 1961.

During the 60s and 70s, he was an active guerrilla fighter of left-wing armed groups that were fighting against the governments of the Punto Fijo Pact.

By then, he adopted the pseudonym “Commander Fausto” and led guerrilla fronts. In 1966, he joined the Party of the Venezuelan Revolution (PRV), where he actively collaborated with fellow guerrilla leader Douglas Bravo.

With the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution, he held various positions in the government of President Hugo Chávez.

He was minister of energy and mines (oil), secretary general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), president of PDVSA, minister of economy and finance and foreign minister of the Republic.

Rodríguez Araque also wrote works on the energy sector and also served as Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) between 2012-2014.
