On January 4, 2012, the Leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, Hugo Chávez Frías, emphasized to the company ExxonMobil, as well as to any other transnational that wanted to negotiate with oil, that Venezuela is a sovereign country and does not accept arrogance or orders from anyone.
“We are sovereign and I want to stress that (...) my answer to this company and any other company in the world, is that this is a sovereign country, here for us the first thing is the Bolivarian Constitution, there is nothing above the Constitution Venezuelan that we Venezuelans gave ourselves freely and democratically,” said the Commander from the Miraflores Palace.
In that regard, he stated that Venezuela is always willing to reach strategic arrangements always on good terms and that, above all, would benefit the people.
“The ExxonMobil company, unfortunately arrogant, did not want to reach an agreement with us (...) they wanted in this lawsuit, they pretended to be, like, 12 billion dollars, crazy, crazy. How crazy would it be for this company that this decision recognizes only less than 10% of what they intended. Now, imagine yourself, you draw the conclusion, how much these companies stole here for 100 years, they stole from us, rather they should pay damages here for 100 years, they don't have enough capital to pay us, it wouldn't be enough for them,” he said.
