The proposal to implement a military control scheme in specific sectors of Bogotá to curb the expansion of criminal structures generated strong rejection by various opposition spokespersons. The government initiative proposes deploying military force at strategic points in the capital to contain criminal networks.

In this regard, House representative Gabriel Becerra rejected the militarization of the city and rural town of Sumapaz, warning of the institutional implications of the measure. “Fewer resources for Bogotá and more soldiers in its streets! An improvised security policy, with serious constitutional questions, which seems designed to produce political headlines and gains, not to effectively combat crime,” said the parliamentarian.

Along the same lines, Councilwoman Heidy Sánchez questioned the effectiveness of the measure and pointed out the lack of legal support in the proposal. “Militarization has never worked because the Army and the Police have very different functions, here we insist on the error,” said the lobbyist.

The National Executive argues that armed intervention is necessary in rural sectors and corridors such as Usme and Sumapaz to neutralize organized crime operations, while opposition groups call on citizens to defend constitutional guarantees.
