The Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) reported an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 in the department of Antioquia on Wednesday night, December 25.

The earthquake occurred at 19:52 local time, with a surface depth (less than 30 km) and the epicenter was Tarazá, Antioquia, as indicated by the entity, which reported a few minutes later, at 19:57, an aftershock of magnitude 3.0, also with an epicenter in Tarazá.

Social media users said they felt the strong tremor in Medellín, Envigado, Rionegro, Caldas, Bello and Caucasia, as well as in the departments of Santander, Boyacá and some areas of the Coffee Region. Some even indicated that they felt a little softer towards the center of the country, in Bogotá, according to international media.

The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, said that the tremor was felt strong in that city, but that “so far we have no reports of damage.”
