The Colombian government activated the emergency alarm due to the intense rains that have fallen during the last 48 hours; these have caused an increase in river levels, overflows and landslides, thus generating an unprecedented crisis in several regions of the country.
The most affected departments are Chocó and La Guajira, where thousands of families have lost their homes and have been forced to leave their homes due to floods.
In Chocó, one of the hardest-hit departments, 21 of the 35 municipalities are in a serious situation. The overflow of rivers, such as the Baudó, has generated massive floods, affecting more than 100,000 people, Telesur said.
In this regard, the governor of Chocó has begun to distribute humanitarian aid in areas such as Bajo Baudó, where the population has suffered the onslaught of rains and rising rivers.
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, declared an emergency due to a natural disaster on Monday, which will allow additional resources to be allocated to the care of the victims.
The measure also includes support for the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure and the contracting of emergency services.
