The director of Civil Protection of El Salvador, Luis Amaya, reported that this Thursday, June 20, the death toll rose to 13 after heavy rains, the Telesur website reported.

Amaya stated that among the victims there is a minor, who according to the local press was only 14 years old and lost her life due to the collapse of one of the walls of her house.

In this regard, the official specified that the minor resided in the district of Santo Tomas, belonging to the department of La Paz, located in the center of the country.

The tense weather situation in El Salvador has caused, according to this director, since last Friday and Thursday “more than 1,500 incidents, including at least 173 minor landslides, 569 fallen trees and 406 temporarily obstructed roads”.

For his part, the director of hostels in the Central American country, Josué García, explained at a local press conference that 133 shelters are active for the population. Of these centers, 74 shelter 2,196 people.

For its part, the Salvadoran Civil Protection reduced the number of municipalities that were on red alert to 26, while the remaining 44 were declared on orange alert.

He explained that in part these rains are due to the development of tropical cyclone Alberto “which will continue to generate abundant moisture from the Pacific, which will continue the storm over the region, particularly over El Salvador,” said the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN).

“The rains will continue with varying intensity, intermittent and persistent, predicting greater cumulative rainfall in the coastal sector and volcanic mountain range,” underlines the MARN.
