The People's Republic of China assured that the excessive tariffs imposed by the United States (US) seriously infringe the legitimate rights and interests of all nations, violate the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In this regard, China will apply new countermeasures and will persevere to the end if the US ignores the interests of both nations and the global community and persists in unleashing a trade or tariff war, said Lin Jian, spokesman for the Asian Foreign Ministry, in response to a query about the threat of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to apply an additional tariff of 50 percent to China if it does not eliminate its countermeasures.

Beijing announced last Friday the imposition of 34% tariffs on imported US products, in response to the 34% tariffs previously imposed by the US on April 2.

This Monday, the United States threatened to increase them by 50% more starting April 9 if China persists in defending itself.
