The Government of China expressed its firm opposition and deep dissatisfaction with the announcement by the United States to provide a new military aid package to Taiwan, reported the Prensa Latina website.
Washington's support amounts to $571 million, including a $295 million arms sale approved by the Department of Defense.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry of the Asian giant said that this measure seriously violates the principle of a single China and the provisions contained in the three joint communiqués between Beijing and Washington.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the sale of arms and military aid to Taiwan represent a direct violation of China's sovereignty and security interests, in addition to sending a serious and wrong message of support to separatist forces on the island.
“Taiwan is at the core of China's fundamental interests. The question of Taiwan constitutes the first red line in Sino-American relations,” the statement said.
The text stressed that US actions to “arm Taiwan” will only increase tensions and jeopardize stability in the strait.
China urged Washington to “immediately stop” its arms sales to the island and its policies that threaten regional peace and stability.
In addition, it warned that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has repeatedly rejected military ties between the United States and Taiwan, as well as any attempt by Taipei to promote separatism through military means and the support of external forces.
Earlier this month, Beijing announced countermeasures against 13 companies in the North American military industry and six of their senior executives linked to arms sales to Taiwan.
