The President of Chile, José Antonio Kast, signed this Tuesday a package of urgent measures aimed at cushioning the economic impact caused by the sustained escalation in fuel prices, resulting from international instability and the war crisis in the Middle East.

The government plan sent to Congress includes a bill to provide financial support through funds and credits to vulnerable sectors such as artisanal fishermen, transporters and small merchants, in addition to strengthening the Guarantee Fund for Small Entrepreneurs (FOGAPE). The initiative seeks to encourage employment and boost the national economy in the face of the inflationary scenario.

During the official ceremony held at the Palacio de La Moneda, the Chilean president emphasized external pressures on local prices: “We know that the international scenario remains uncertain, and we are not going to promise what does not depend on us. We thought that the war would not last long, and our expectations were that it would end quickly and that everything would return to normal. Unfortunately, this has not been the case and the price of fuel has continued to rise, refineries have been destroyed.”

The adoption of these contingency policies also responds to the deterioration of social indicators in the southern nation, after the National Institute of Statistics reported an unemployment rate of 9.5% between May and June, reaching the highest level of unemployment recorded in the last five years.
