CHÁVEZ IS RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT AND CALLED FOR UNITY, RATIONALITY, PRUDENCE AND PATIENCE

- On July 30, 2000, Commander Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías was re-elected for the first time, for a six-year term in office. The electoral universe of registered voters was 11,720,660 voters.
- In his favor, 59% of the votes (3,757,773), a turnout of 59.76 (6,637,276 votes), he won the majority of the governorates, municipalities and parliamentary seats. Abstention was 43.69%.
- During those general elections, all state and municipal public authorities were re-legitimized.
- The political map of Venezuela was painted red. The Fifth Republic Movement won an absolute majority of the seats in parliament (92 deputies), 12 governorates and 80% of the municipalities.
- Upon being proclaimed president of the Republic, Chávez called for national unity and invoked criteria of rationality, prudence and patience.
- He also congratulated the opposition sector that did not vote for him, giving them the assurance of establishing a government of national scope and prosperity for all Venezuelans, regardless of their partisan inclination.
- These were the first general elections held under the framework of the new Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which was approved on December 15, 1999.
