The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, received this Monday the Style Copies of Monsignor Alberto Ortega Martín, the new Apostolic Nuncio appointed by Pope Francis to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

On behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and all the Venezuelan people, “we express our best wishes and support in his work in our country,” said the Foreign Minister.

The protocol ceremony was held at the Casa Amarilla Antonio José de Sucre, in Caracas, and strengthens relations between the Catholic Church and the Venezuelan State, as well as promotes dialogue and reconciliation.

The apostolic ambassador, born in Madrid in 1962 and who speaks Spanish, Italian, English and French, became a priest in 1990; he has a degree in Canon Law and joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1997.

He served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Nicaragua, between the years 1997-1999, as well as in that of South Africa, in 1999-2002 and in Lebanon, in the period of 2002-2004. He belonged to the Relations with States section of the Secretariat of State from 2004 to 2015.

The religious was responsible for the Vatican embassies in Jordan and Iraq in 2015, and in 2019 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Chile.

Pope Francis announced the appointment of Monsignor Ortega Martín on May 14, after two years without diplomatic representation in Venezuela, following the death of Aldo Giordano in 2021.
