The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, reaffirmed Venezuela's commitment to complying with the Proclamation of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and invited Guyana to demonstrate its commitment to finding a solution to the border dispute over the Essequibo.
This Wednesday, in his speech at the general debate of the 79th Regular Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), he defended the will of the Venezuelan people to recover the territory stolen by the United Kingdom in the 19th century.
“On December 3, 2023, the Venezuelan people expressed themselves clearly and forcefully, in a consultative referendum, through which they granted an inescapable mandate to the Venezuelan State to recover Guiana Esequiba, a territory that represents a sacred heritage of the struggle of our Liberators,” he stressed.
In a press release from the Foreign Ministry, the diplomat is quoted as adding that the governments of the United States of America and Guyana are currently violating the Argyle Joint Declaration, which endangers peace, security and regional stability, due to the military presence and the illegitimate granting of oil concessions in an undelimited maritime area.
“In this context, we take this opportunity to reiterate our firm commitment to the CELAC Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. It is time for Guyana to demonstrate its commitment to this Proclamation, to dialogue, to mutual respect, to tolerance and understanding, thus returning to the Geneva Agreement of 1966, the only way to achieve a mutually satisfactory solution,” said Gil.
