The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) began this Thursday the payment of deposit guarantees to the savers of Ueno bank, an entity that intervened on Tuesday for insolvency, a fact that has triggered a political crisis in the South American country.

According to a statement from the issuer, payments of up to 10 million Guaraní (equivalent to 1,565 U.S. dollars at the official rate) are aimed at a first group of savers who do not have debts with the institution and who have accounts with other banks to receive their funds. “If your total deposits do not exceed 10 million Guaraní, you will receive the full amount,” the agency said.

The intervention of Ueno bank, which managed the resources of more than 2.9 million customers, was ordered after the BCP detected that its solvency index fell below 50% of the required minimum. The agency attributed the fall to “adjustments made to its financial statements during the regularization process”, which has raised concerns about the millions of dollars in retirement funds deposited in that entity.

In the midst of the controversy, President Santiago Peña submitted his resignation from office, which was not accepted by Congress because he was left without a quorum, while the Senate is moving forward with an impeachment trial to remove him. Faced with the situation, the still president expressed his desire that those affected be guaranteed the return of their resources. “That the Deposit Guarantee Fund fulfills its purpose and that public funds and resources that belong to all Paraguayans be protected,” he said on his social networks, announcing his resignation for the sake of the country's stability.
