Speculations surrounding possible sanctions against well-known conservative American journalist Tucker Carlson erupted, after Moscow confirmed the interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, replied: “yes, I can confirm it”, when asked this Wednesday about the rumored conversation between the journalist and the Russian leader, although he clarified that the alleged transcript that began to be released on the internet is a forgery.

Carlson has been in Moscow for several days, and earlier this week he announced on social media his meeting with President Putin, in a post that accumulated almost 70 million views in one night.

After its publication, Carlson could face negative consequences in the European Union (EU), Guy Verhofstadt, former Belgian prime minister and current member of the European Parliament, told Newsweek.

In this regard, the legislator asked the European bloc to explore the possibility of imposing a “travel ban” on Carlson, and described the journalist as “a spokesperson” for former President Donald Trump and Putin.

“Since Putin is a war criminal and the EU sanctions anyone who helps him in that effort, it seems logical that the Foreign Action Service should also examine his case,” he added.
