In a festive and devotional atmosphere, the Aquiles Nazoa Cultural House opened its doors last Saturday to celebrate with the town an afternoon full of songs, tenths and recitals, as part of the commemoration of the Holy Cross of May, which was marked by an emotional musical performance of the Parranda Selecta.

During a concert called “Cantos en Decimas a la Cruz de Mayo”, the group played a repertoire composed of traditional Venezuelan music, songs in tenths, spinels typical of the east of the country, tenths Gracitana, Punto y Llanto, Gaita Margariteña, Galerón, and Fulía Oriental.

“We have had the opportunity, thank God, to make different repertoires to celebrate not only the May Cross, but also San Juan Bautista, the holiday parties, and Caribbean music; in these years that we have trained, this has allowed us to show a variety of traditional popular music,” said Ángel Palacios, the general coordinator of the Parranda Selecta.

He explained that for this occasion they had percussion instruments such as the Tamboritas de Fulía, the Cuatro, the bandola, guitar, among others, which come from different populations of the country.

In Venezuela, the wake of the Cross of May is a religious cultural event that belongs to the tradition that has covered almost the entire national territory for more than 150 years. In most parts of the country, it is customary to wear the cross, adorn it, mount it on an altar and light it.
