On October 28, 1959, Camilo Cienfuegos, a hero from the Sierra Maestra who fought for the dignity of the Cuban people, flying the flags of love, justice and equality, died in a plane crash.
The fact that caused great shock among the Cuban people who were reborn under the hope of the “Bearded Revolution”.
He was born on February 6, 1932 in the city of Havana. His charism, resolute word and cunning Caribbean, led him to be baptized as the “Commander of the People”. His laughing smile and his undeniable optimism were the object of admiration of all those who fought on his side and who had the opportunity to meet him.
This hero of Granma led the “Antonio Maceo Column”, which was the first rebel unit to leave the Sierra Maestra refuge and together with Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara, he fought the decisive battle to take Santa Clara (1958), after which they were able to make their way to Havana, where they entered triumphant on January 2, 1959.
“Camilo was Fidel's companion in a hundred battles, Fidel's trusted man in difficult moments of war and the selfless fighter who always made sacrifice an instrument to temper his character and forge that of the troop... Camilo was Camilo, lord of the vanguard, a complete guerrilla fighter who prevailed for that colorful war he knew how to do”.
