This Monday, December 16, the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Ryabkov, reported that the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will hold an emergency meeting to discuss what is happening in Syria after the coup d'etat.

“In the BRICS, we discuss everything related to the Middle East. Undoubtedly, this situation will also be the subject of consideration. Above all, because for some time now the BRICS have established a format for specialized consultations on the Middle East at the level of vice-ministers of foreign affairs,” Riabkov explained, in an interview with the Analytical Center of the local agency TASS.

He specified that he hopes that the topic will not only remain in a discussion, but that it will also make progress in “in-depth coordination and ideally the development of common approaches”.

“Since the issue of an inclusive political process, which should define the framework of the future political order in terms of the organization and functioning of the Syrian Government, is now increasingly topical, and given that what we see today is quite fragmentary and has a literally transitory nature, of course, the BRICS will naturally turn it into a topic of debate,” he said.

He also stated that “undoubtedly, Israel is the main beneficiary of recent developments.”

“I would like to warn certain exalts in Jerusalem (Al-Quds) against overestimating their advantage. I would also remind them, among other things, that the annexation of the Golan Heights, as many now say, is still totally unacceptable. Israel must return to full compliance with the well-known 1974 agreement with Syria,” he stressed.

On December 8, armed opposition groups arrived in Damascus and overthrew President Bashar Al-Assad, who left the country after 24 years of being in power, while the ruling Baath Party decided to suspend its political activity until further notice.
