Brazil: Floods claim the lives of 137 people in the south of the country

More than 400,000 people have been evacuated

The heavy floods that have hit southern Brazil for a week have claimed the lives of 137 people, as announced in the latest Rio Bravo Civil Defense update.

The agency specified that almost two million people are among the number of people affected by the heavy rains shaking the south of the nation.

Telesur explained that at least 141 people are still missing. This figure is in addition to the “more than 400,000” that have been evacuated, including some 340,000 to shelters in the homes of friends or family members and another 71,000 to protective spaces created by the Brazilian authorities.

Rio Grande do Soul has reported “136 dead and 756 injured”, while the other deceased was confirmed in the neighboring area of Santa Catarina, where the climate picture is much less intense.

In this regard, the state government of Rio Grande has created a website where it has provided interesting data. Following these data, according to the entity, 441 municipalities have been affected within the state, 71 million 409 people remain sheltered, 339 thousand 928 have been evacuated and 70 thousand 863 have been rescued.
