The government of São Paulo, in southwestern Brazil, declared a state of emergency in 45 cities on Tuesday, as a result of forest fires, which have left clouds of smoke visible as far as the Brazilian capital.

The authorities sent planes from the federal government to counter the fires that hit the territorial entity. This emergency caused the cancellation of flights and the closure of land roads, making it the worst month of August in terms of fires since 1998.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) announced the landing of a plane at Ribeirão Preto airport, developed for fire control, after a national record of fires broke out last Friday, with more than 2,300 cases reported. Meanwhile, according to the monitoring of the Civil Defense Emergency Management Center (CGE), there are 21 provinces that are facing active forest fires. All affected municipalities are being monitored, international agencies said.
