Bolivian Chamber of Deputies approves bill for judicial elections

The Bolivian Chamber of Deputies approved Bill 144 on Tuesday to hold judicial elections in 2024, a text that was sent to the Senate for review and subsequent enactment, the legislative body said.

Bill 144 consists of 42 articles, five additional provisions and a final one, without any modifications considered despite the comments of different legislators.

The legislative session lasted more than 10 hours and ended early this Tuesday morning, amid the vigil of sectors related to the road blockades that have been going on for a couple of weeks in the South American country.

The approved text had already received consensus since last week from the three main forces represented in the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies.

On February 2, the Bicameral Commission made up of legislators from the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), the Citizens' Community (CC) and Creemos agreed to move forward with Bill 144, which contemplates the holding of judicial elections in 2024.

The Bolivian Senate, in turn, has scheduled an extraordinary session this Tuesday in which the approval of the legal framework is expected to be immediately sent to the Executive and to be enacted expeditiously.

Members of the Unity Pact , a political alliance that supports former President Evo Morales (2006-2019), announced the holding of consultations to lift blockades in the country, following the approval of judicial elections.

Bolivia is celebrating almost two weeks of blockades by supporters of the former president, with greater emphasis on the central department of Cochabamba, a route that links the east and the west of the country.
