Authorities from the Francisco de Miranda municipality, in the state of Guárico, declared an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest to the Loceras Collective of El Socorro de La Portuguesa, during a solemn session held at the Municipal Palace of Calabozo.
The declaration, led by Mayor Alfreína Álvarez, formally recognizes this artisanal collective that preserves, defends and transmits the local earthenware techniques, a legacy of its indigenous ancestors. Also present at the event were the sole authority of Culture of Guárico, José Román; the state coordinator of the Cultural Mission, Maryori Solé, and the chronicler of Calabozo, Ubaldo Ruiz, reviewed a press release from VTV.
The president of the Red Art Foundation, Aracelis García Reyes, was the keynote speaker. In his speech, he highlighted the primitive connection through clay and reflected on the value of craftsmanship compared to technology.
“They tell us that a machine can design a jar in seconds, that a program can calculate the exact temperature of an oven. And yes, it can. But no machine can feel the exact weight of the moisture in the tanned hands of a crazy woman,” said García Reyes. He also quoted anthropologist Miguel Acosta Saignes to point out that clay is not a decorative object, but “an astronomical, mythical and spiritual archive of our original peoples”.
