(WHAT's going on in Venezuela? , March 18, 1966)
- On October 27, 1965, the shackled body of professor and communist leader Alberto Lovera appeared dragged through the nets of a fisherman. This happened on a beach called El Morro de Barcelona, near Lecherías, in Puerto La Cruz, Anzoátegui state.
- To hide the truth, the government of Raúl Leoni did everything possible to cover up the material and intellectual authors of the crime. Among them, the then Minister of Internal Relations, Gonzalo Barrios, and the Digepol tormentors: J.J. Patiño, Carlos Vegas, Alberto Ochoa, José R. Antunez and Carlos Quintero.
- Deputy José Vicente Rangel, in a 44-page report, presented irrefutable evidence of the government's responsibility in this assassination, which was reflected in his book “The Black File”.
- The actions of Rangel and María del Mar Álvarez de Lovera, the widow of the murdered professor, not only served to set a precedent in the fight for the clarification of the crime, but also to release some eyewitnesses, political prisoners, who were arbitrarily detained in the Las Brisas Building, Los Chaguaramos Urbanization in Caracas, headquarters of the State's political police.
- The evidence showed that it was at the headquarters of the General Police Directorate (Digepol), where Professor Alberto Lovera, after being subjected to torture, had his vertebrae broken, his hands cut off and part of his body mutilated; he was finally thrown, with a beak stuck in his chest on a beach in Lecherías, edo. Anzoategui.
- Rangel denounced the system of torture, disappearances and murders established from Digepol headquarters, whose responsibility fell to the Government of Raúl Leoni (1964-1969).
- One year after this abominable crime, it was already known who was guilty of the murder, but at the hands of the Technical Judicial Police (PTJ) the file was colloquially “routed” between the Judge of the Second Criminal Court of First Instance of Barcelona, in charge of Dávila Varone and Cumare Navas, Judge of First Instance in Criminal Matters of Caracas, in whose court he was paralyzed for several years.
