The President of the United States, Joe Biden, authorized Ukraine for the first time to attack the interior of Russian territory with American long-range missiles, The New York Times reported this Sunday, November 17, citing people familiar with the matter.
“It is likely that the weapons were initially used against Russian and North Korean troops in defense of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of western Russia,” said the US officials, whose names were not provided, reported the Russia Today portal.
According to the article, the decision “represents an important change in U.S. policy.” However, officials stated that they “do not expect” such a step to “fundamentally alter the course” of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, but rather that their objective is to “send a message to the North Koreans that their forces are vulnerable and that they should not send more.”
“Officials said that, while it is likely that Ukrainians will first use missiles against Russian and North Korean troops that threaten Ukrainian forces in Kursk, Biden could authorize them to use weapons elsewhere,” the media said.
In this context, some U.S. officials warned that Ukraine's use of missiles “across the border could push Russian President Vladimir Putin to retaliate with force against the United States and its coalition partners.” In turn, there are those who “said they thought those fears were exaggerated”.
Later the same day, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported that France and the United Kingdom also authorized the Kiev regime to use their long-range Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles to launch attacks deep inside Russian territory.
So far, Russia has not officially confirmed the presence of North Korean troops in the Russian province of Kursk.
In mid-September, President Putin stated that if NATO makes the decision to allow Kiev to attack internationally recognized Russian territory with long-range weapons, that would mean that the countries of the block “are at war with Russia”.
In that scenario, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, stated that the United States has entered a “phase of madness” by allowing Ukraine to attack Russia with long-range missiles.
“The governments of the United States , France and Great Britain (United Kingdom), the 'holy alliance of evil', have just approved the criminal Nazi of (Vladimir) Zelensky in Ukraine to attack our sister Russia,” said the president this Sunday, the 17th, at the Congress of the Historical Bloc of Venezuela.
