Benilde Ascanio Educational Complex in Caracas joins the production of Urban Agriculture

Within the framework of the My Conuco Carlos Lanz School Plan, Jhoanna Carrillo, head of the Ministry of Popular Power of Urban Agriculture (Minppau) visited the Benilde Ascanio Educational Complex, located in the parish of La Vega, Bolivarian Libertador municipality in Caracas, with the objective of learning about the productive experience carried out by seven school brigades in the organoponic garden.
Along with the Deputy Minister of Training and Agrourban Culture, Saúl Osío, from the roofed court of the same educational unit, the minister addressed a few words to the students, “I am happy to see the future of our country, sitting here are the doctors, teachers, nurses, architects, soldiers, baseball players, architects and engineers of our country. You are the future of our Venezuela! , you are beautiful and you have to fight for what you believe in.”
For his part, Saúl Osío, Deputy Minister of Training and Agrourban Culture, added that the Agronomy career has a long future. “Venezuela is producing more food, the economic blockade has forced us to reinvent ourselves. Nowadays, agronomic engineering and all careers associated with agriculture are much more remunerated than before.”
Meanwhile, Carlos Escalona, director of the campus, assured that they have 1,664 students between elementary and middle school, who are committed to the production of food in Benilde Ascanio.
Likewise, Airana Barrera, a third-year general education student, explained that thanks to the “Hands to the Seed” program, they have come up with the main ideas for creating the garden. “Thanks to our conuco, we have all learned to cultivate, harvest and learn more about Agriculture. The food we harvest is taken directly to the dining room, for our daily diet.”
Also, Oscar Pernía, a 4th year student, explained the process of planting, watering, time and care that they dedicate to the aforementioned socio-productive space. He said that they produce vegetables such as paprika, lettuce, chives, coriander, chili pepper, eggplant, celery, chard and parsley, in eight beds. “This initiative promotes the production of healthy foods that go directly to the dining room, and it also provides us with knowledge to multiply them in our home.”
Harvesting of items
The Minister had the opportunity to harvest lettuce, together with boys and girls from basic education, who showed their emotion at the time of obtaining the vegetable.
At the same time, the spokeswoman said that “we are doing wonderful and great things for Venezuela, with the students, with the boys and girls, with the OBE, with the brigades of My School Director Carlos Lanz, which was initiated by our president Nicolás Maduro.”
The My Conuco Carlos Lanz School Plan is an initiative of the Bolivarian Government led by President Nicolás Maduro, which aims to promote urban agriculture in schools. The goal of the plan is to teach children about the importance of healthy and sustainable eating, as well as to help schools produce their own food.
