Considered to be one of five realistic attempts to take the region, on May 25, 1813, the Battle of Alto de los Godos or the Third Battle of Maturín was fought, an encounter in which the republican forces of Manuel Piar and the royalists of Captain General Domingo Monteverde clashed near what is now the capital of the state of Monagas.

After two fights in Maturín, Piar and his people maintain military control of the area, which represented the success of the independence patriots, but which immediately came to the ears of Monteverde in Caracas, so he decided to take personal care of the Venezuelan revolutionaries.

Monteverde managed to recruit 260 veterans to go to Maturín, with the clear intention of reducing the defenders of the Sultana del Guarapiche, who championed the cause of freedom.
