On December 6, 1928, the Banana Tree Massacre occurred in the Colombian town of Ciénaga, when a regiment of the armed forces of the South American country opened fire on thousands of strikers protesting the terrible working conditions in the United Fruit Company.
In the 1920s, this American company controlled the banana sector in Latin America, especially in Colombia.
The then president Miguel Abadía Méndez allowed the massacre of 1,800 Colombians who, despite being workers of the United Fruit Company, were in misery, were demanding wage improvements.
