The Australian Parliament approved a motion calling on the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom to cease the persecution of the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, the Telesur website reported.

According to local media, the initiative approved this Wednesday, 14, was presented by legislator Andrew Wilkie and received 86 votes in favor after being supported by the green and labor groups, as well as by independent deputies.

The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, who voted in favor of the motion, said that the results in his country's legislative framework constitute “the greatest demonstration to date that Assange's imprisonment is unjust.”

“It demonstrates once again the broad support it receives in Parliament. The United States must recognize the weight of Australia's political support and abandon the extradition process,” he added.

In this regard, Albanese pointed out that if Assange is extradited to the United States it would be “a direct attack on media freedom” and an alert to journalists that they too could be imprisoned.

The statements come a week before the London High Court holds the hearing to examine whether Assange can appeal his extradition to the United States, approved in 2022.

This Thursday, the 15th, the wife of the founder of WikiLeaks, Stella Assange, assured that her husband would die if extradited to North American territory, where he could be sentenced to 175 years of deprivation of liberty.

“His health is worsening, physically and mentally. His life is in danger every day he is in prison and if he is extradited he will die,” he said.
