The Australian Senate approved this Thursday, November 28, the first law in the world that requires companies such as Meta (banned in Russia for terrorists), Reddit or TikTok to prevent children under 16 from using social networks, reported the Sputnik portal.

According to The Guardian, the legislation, which had already obtained the approval of the House of Representatives, was drafted in response to the sayings of the Labor Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese.

Albanese argues that there is a “clear and causal link between the rise of social networks and the damage to the mental health of young Australians”.

The law seeks to protect children and adolescents from bullying and potential mental health problems.

Thus, it creates the category of “social media platforms with age restrictions” to prohibit access to children under 16, even if they already have accounts.
