On September 30, 1813, the hero Atanasio Girardot died, the event occurred at the time he received the order to confront the royalist troops at the Hacienda de Bárbula and the mission ended favorably, since he managed to drive them away; however, Colonel Girardot lost his life in that confrontation, at the precise moment when he was planting the Venezuelan flag.

Manuel Atanasio Girardot Díaz was a renowned hero of the wars for independence that took place in Venezuela and Colombia in the 19th century. He worked under the orders of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, in the so-called Admirable Campaign, within the framework of Venezuelan liberation, achieving victory through this expedition in the western part of the country.

Girardot was a great supporter of Bolívar and in many cases knew how to be his right hand and his great ally in the preparation of military strategies.
