The director general of Public Security and Public Order of the National Police of Ecuador, Freddy Goyes, reported this Wednesday, January 3, that 50 violent deaths were registered during the first day of 2024, reported the news agency Prensa Latina.
At a press conference, he asserted that specialized agents carry out the investigation of each of the homicides, since each case is different
Goyes indicated that on January 1 in the Durán municipality, province of Guayas, there were several violent events, an action that triggered a deployment where they executed arrests of people with firearms, including a minor.
Ecuador closed 2023 as the most violent country in Latin America, with more than seven thousand murders.
Faced with this situation, he specified that, in coordination with the Armed Forces, they are strengthening the security system in seven districts with the greatest conflict and in 26 areas of criminal prediction.
“In the coordinated operations in December, 658 firearms, 13,964 ammunition and 832 white weapons were seized,” Goyes said.
For his part, the Director of Operations of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Alexander Levoyer, stated that the Army intensified joint actions to control weapons and explosives, in major cities and highways, as well as shopping centers, and beaches to ensure the flow of tourist and economic activities in the country.
The escalation of insecurity remains the main concern of Ecuadorians when only two days have passed since the start of 2024.
