On November 13, 1950, Colonel Carlos Delgado Chalbaud, president of the Military Government Junta that overthrew Rómulo Gallegos, was assassinated in Caracas on November 24, 1948.

Delgado Chalbaud was kidnapped in the immediate vicinity of the current Venezuelan National Radio (RNV), Chapellín, on his way to the Miraflores Palace, accompanied only by his sidekick and a motorist.

The assassination of Chalbaud constitutes the first assassination in the republican history of Venezuela. Although it could not be confirmed, for many the mastermind was General Marcos Pérez Jiménez, with whom he had a great rivalry for maintaining different ideals; other sources say that his assassination was financed by the president of Shell in Venezuela.

Delgado Chalbaud was also part of the Falke expedition, which tried to dismiss Juan Vicente Gómez and was part of the group of soldiers who prepared the coup against General Isaías Medina Angarita.
