Argentina: Milei repeals decree that prevented evictions on indigenous lands

This Tuesday, in an Official Gazette, the far-right president of Argentina, Javier Milei, eliminated the emergency decree on indigenous lands that had been in effect since 2006, so that from now on their occupants can be evicted.

The report criticizes the extensions that this measure had over the past 18 years, mainly in the south of the country, and which so far has caused 254 legal conflicts.

Likewise, the Milei administration considers that the measure “generated legal uncertainty and a serious effect on the property rights of the 'legitimate owners', or the rights of their tenants or holders”.

Last November, Argentina became the only country in the United Nations (UN) to vote against a resolution on the rights of indigenous peoples, in an unprecedented move.

Argentina's decision to vote against the resolution generated criticism from human rights and indigenous organizations, who consider it a setback in the fight for the protection of the rights of indigenous communities.
