On March 25, 1814, General Antonio Ricuarte became a symbol of the courage and lineage of the patriotic people, after carrying out the heroic action of immolating himself next to the weapons park, in the San Mateo ranch, to prevent it from being taken over by realistic forces.
Ricaurte stood out for his ferocity and intelligence in the battles of La Grita, Carache, Niquitao and Taguanes, where the independence fighters crushed imperial forces.
In February 1814 José Tomás Boves had advanced on Caracas and occupied the town of Cagua in Aragua with more than eight thousand soldiers, almost all of them on horseback.
On March 25, Boves mobilized his troops and Antonio Ricaurte, seeing that they were overwhelmed, sent his companions out of the house, let most of the royalists in and blew up the weapons park. Everyone was surprised by the decision and Boves decided to retire.
209 years after this heroic act, the Peoples of our America honor the memory of this distinguished patriot who is the image of the lineage of those who, guided by the desire for freedom and sovereignty, are still fighting against old and new empires.
