In a strong statement, the Antifascist International, Guatemala Chapter, expressed its strong rejection of the arrival of Edmundo González Urrutia to the capital city, calling him an “emblem of death, terrorism and imperialist interference.”
The organization denounced that González's presence represents a direct threat to the values of peace, justice and solidarity that guide the anti-fascist struggle in Latin America.
The statement notes that the former candidate and fugitive from Venezuelan justice symbolizes the forces that have historically attacked the sovereignty of the Bolivarian people, seeking to perpetuate the plunder of their resources and the subordination of their national decisions.
He also criticizes the reception that the Government of Guatemala offered to the leader of the extremist right, an action that they call a normalization of practices of aggression and interference.
“In these times of challenges and adversities, the unity of our peoples is more important than ever,” the organization stressed, while denouncing the efforts of sectors of the Venezuelan right, in complicity with governments in the region, to destabilize the Government of Nicolás Maduro and the process of the Bolivarian Revolution.
The Anti-Fascist International reiterated its unrestricted support for the Venezuelan people, for President Nicolás Maduro and for the sovereign right of Venezuela to decide its destiny without external interference. “Venezuela remains undefeated as a bastion of resistance and dignity in the face of U.S. imperialism,” the organization said in its statement.
Finally, the statement called on the Guatemalan people and social movements in Latin America to reinforce unity in the face of the forces of hate and oppression. From Guatemala, the Anti-Fascist International reaffirmed its commitment to the defense of peace, social justice and the self-determination of peoples.
