The National Assembly (AN) formally installed the special commission designated to review the Constitutional Law against Hate for Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance, with the purpose of drafting a partial reform project that will be submitted for discussion and approval in parliament.

“We installed this commission and starting today we began work to review the articles and prepare the reform project,” said Deputy Pedro Infante.

The deputy indicated that the reform seeks to correct the inadequate application of the law in specific cases and to promote tolerance, peace and democratic coexistence. “The central objective is to rebuild trust in institutions and to energize the democratic life of the country,” he said, mentioning that one of the central issues will be the decriminalization of certain behaviors and the precision of definitions to ensure their correct application.

Infante also announced that the standard could receive a new name, more proactive and aimed at prevention. “The first debate that this law should have is a new name, more proactive, more in the positive, more for education and training, to prevent acts of violence and hate,” he said.

The commission envisages an extensive consultation process with social sectors, victims of violence, non-governmental organizations, the justice system, the media and universities. “We are working hand in hand with all political sectors to make a law that pays tribute to coexistence and peace,” he concluded.
