The National Assembly (AN) unanimously approved the first discussion of the Bill for the Protection of Livestock Activity, presented by the deputy Gerardina Parada, who stated that the proposal “regulates, protects and promotes national livestock activity in all its forms, incorporating control, control and technological traceability mechanisms to guarantee agri-food security”.

Parada explained that the law promotes primary production, the modernization of livestock production units and the application of appropriate technologies and good livestock practices. He highlighted the importance of preserving national breeds such as Carora and Criollo Limonero, considered to be high-value germplasm banks for the tropics.

He indicated that the project establishes a system of comprehensive traceability of the herd through bioelectrical identification and digital codes, and recalled that “almost 65% of the diseases affecting the world population are zoonoses, so guaranteeing animal health is guaranteeing public health,” he said while adding that the proposal strictly regulates slaughter centers to eradicate clandestine slaughter and ensure the safety of products.

Deputy Wilmar Castro Soteldo stressed that the law “covers the entire livestock sector: buffalo, goat, sheep, pig, poultry and equine” and recalled that Venezuela recently exported more than 274,000 live animals, and noted that the instrument will consolidate production and resume export operations for cattle and pigs.

Castro Soteldo stressed the need to protect national breeds such as Carora, Criollo Limonero, Perijanero and the Creole horse, and affirmed that the Parliament is committed to building a law that favors small and medium-sized producers and strengthens livestock development in the country.
