On June 25, 1821, Ambrosio Plaza, one of the most outstanding heroes of our war of independence, died. Son of Diego de la Plaza and Liendo, and Josefa Obelmejías and Rengifo.

On December 7, 1791, he was born in Caracas. He began his military career in 1810, joining the White Militia battalion of Caracas as a cadet, becoming second lieutenant that same year.

He accompanied Francisco de Miranda on different campaigns, and then joined Simón Bolívar's army. He was appointed commander of the Infantry of the Liberator's Guard of Honor, with which he acted in operations in Magdalena and Cartagena.

After being exiled with Bolivar to Jamaica and then to Haiti, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and participated in The Keys Expedition in 1816. Some time later, under the orders of General Gregor MacGregor, he carried out the so-called Retreat of the Six Hundred.

He fought several battles with Bolívar, but without a doubt the most important one was the one he fought in the fields of Carabobo on June 24, 1821, of which he led his division. There he gave his life for the Fatherland, since there Colonel Plaza was shot by a gun and as a result of his injury, he died the next day at 30 years of age.

Ambrosio Plaza was characterized by his tireless and firm fight for freedom, becoming a national hero for all the times he risked his life in each of the battles he participated in to secure Venezuelan independence. It was these reasons that encouraged the creation of a municipality of Guarenas that currently bears his name to honor his emancipatory struggle.
