Albanian university students and professors intensified their protest demonstrations in front of the headquarters of the Government in Tirana this Wednesday to demand the immediate resignation of the Prime Minister, Edi Rama, whom they say is primarily responsible for the severe crisis in the education system and for various schemes of institutional corruption in the Balkan nation.

According to information highlighted by Telesur on its Telegram channel, the demonstrators once again rejected the negotiation proposal formulated by the Executive by symbolically overturning a set of chairs with the inscription “Dialogue” that had been placed in front of the official office. The university community argues that accepting a process of dialogue without previously agreeing to the resignation of the head of government would mean validating questioned management and dismantling the central axis of social demands.

For his part, Prime Minister Edi Rama reinstalled the structures and reiterated his call for talks, stating that “no motive justifies violence” and warning about the application of severe legal and financial sanctions against people who attack public or private property. However, security forces have responded to the mobilization by deploying police officers, tear gas and water cannons to disperse attendees.

The firm stance of the academic sectors and the response of state control bodies deepen political instability in the Albanian capital, where protests continue to gain social support while university representatives make any institutional approach conditional on the definitive departure of the highest authority of the Cabinet.
