In a statement, this Wednesday, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), rejected the imposition of extortive trade measures by the United States (USA) on Venezuela.

Here is the full statement:

Following the format of baseless and ideologized aggressions, the United States government is launching a new attack against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, announcing the imposition of extortive commercial measures to affect the smooth running of the Venezuelan economy, with the clear objective of destabilizing institutions and peace in the sister nation.

The member countries of ALBA-TCP categorically reject the announcement by the US Administration to impose tariffs on countries that trade hydrocarbons with Venezuela. Such a measure violates the most elementary rules of international trade, as it generates openly discriminatory treatment against Venezuela, with the known objective of affecting its national income and the health of its economy, causing suffering in its population.

The countries of the Bolivarian Alliance denounce the absurd motivation behind this measure of economic aggression, which they intend to justify based on the criminalization and stigmatization of the Venezuelan migrant population, promoting the systematic violation of their human rights, regardless of the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, International Law and international covenants on respect for the migrant population.

In view of this unacceptable context, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) urges the international community to unequivocally condemn this illegal, criminal and hostile action by the U.S. government, which not only threatens the development and well-being of the Venezuelan people, but also constitutes a real threat to the peoples of all the countries of Our Latin and Caribbean America.
