During the Maduro Podcast Episode 9, Adán Chávez said that he and his brother, Commander Hugo Chávez, received a lot of left-wing influence, because Barinas played a good part in the Venezuelan guerrillas between the 60s and 70s.
“Hugo had undoubtedly received influence, not only mine, but also from the boys at that time when we were first active in the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR), then in the Democratic Revolution Party,” he said.
Adán Chávez argued that in the plains of Apure and Barinas there was a strong guerrilla movement, “we listened to the friends of our parents the stories about guerrillas”.
He also said that he (Hugo) had been a member of the left with the MIR since he was 16 years old. “There was a hamlet where a maternal grandmother lived, near Sabaneta, there was a family where almost everyone participated in the guerrillas and our parents visited them and sometimes took us.”
“We saw when people arrived who looked like peasants,” said Hugo, but who were carrying shotguns and one of us would ask and tell us that they were getting married,” he said.
