A major earthquake occurred this Thursday at 14:33 UTC in the southwest of the People's Republic of China, with an epicenter located 202 kilometers north of the prefectural city of Nagqu, according to data provided by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center cited by Telesur.
According to the technical report of the international monitoring agency, the focus of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. The closest town to the epicenter is Nagqu, an urban center that houses about 30,000 inhabitants, while the city of Lhasa, the second closest to the seismic event, is home to approximately 118,000 people.
The earthquake generated preventive alert in the localities of the Tibetan plateau due to the proximity of the focus to population settlements. Local and international seismological authorities maintain permanent monitoring of the area to record possible aftershocks resulting from the earthquake.
Until the publication of the official report, government institutions and regional rescue bodies have not reported human casualties or significant material damage to infrastructure in the area.
