On January 17, 1963, during the presidency of the adeco and representative of puntofixism, Rómulo Betancourt, police forces raided the headquarters of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) in search of the paintings from the Exhibition of 100 Years of French Painting.
During the procedure, they found posters, propaganda and archives of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR), an organization described as subversive by the Democratic Action (AD) government.
This search is an example of the repression and persecution against the militants of the left-wing parties in Venezuela, as well as of the continuous violation of university autonomy during the governments of the Fourth Republic in the country.
During the administration of Betancourt, who was called the “first democratic president”, the order was given to “shoot first and find out later” and there have been a large number of arrests and murders of left-wing leaders and militants.
