On October 26, 1968, Venezuela experienced its greatest sporting feat up to that date, when boxer Francisco “Morochito” Rodríguez won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico.

The Cumanese met Joun-Ju Lee in the final of the flyweight-junior and after two very even rounds, the Venezuelan grew up in the third round and managed to raise his arms, a sign of his undisputed victory.

Along the way, Morochito beat Cuban Rafael Carbonell, New Zealander Khata Karunarathe and American Harlan Marbley.

Morochito” Rodríguez embraced the flag, cried to the sound of Gloria al Bravo Pueblo and left his mark on the history of Venezuelan sports with the first Olympic gold medal.

The magic was repeated at the London 2012 Olympics, with Rubén Limardo's historic fencing achievement, winning the second gold medal at the Olympics, while the third was due to Yulimar Rojas in Tokyo 2020.
