On March 26, 1994, Commander Hugo Chávez was released from prison in Yare, Miranda state, to restore hope to the Venezuelan people and set out on the path to ending the injustice and corruption of right-wing governments that had been in power for years.
After being imprisoned for 2 years following the military rebellion he commanded on February 4, 1992, following the neoliberal measures imposed by the government of Carlos Andrés Pérez, Chávez was victorious with a People with a “For Now”, which was marked in the hearts of Venezuelans.
A visionary leader, the Commander always maintained his revolutionary conviction, and when he got out of jail he asked the People to form a large national front and announced that the Bolivarian Revolutionary Movement 200 would take to the streets to fight for the structural transformation of the country.
The day after his release, Chávez attended the National Pantheon to place a floral offering to Simon Bolivar. “We are here because we will continue to fight for the dignity of the Venezuelan people,” he said.
On March 26, Chávez said: “I'm going to the catacombs to accompany the people.” After that promise, he began his journey to every corner of the country carrying a message of love, peace and profound revolutionary change towards the conquest of popular victory.
