On June 9, 1999, Commander Hugo Chávez was a special guest and threw the first ball of the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays game at Shea Stadium in the Big Apple.

With a national tricolor jacket, pants and baseball shoes, Commander Chávez rode on the edge of the field of play and in the midst of a large crowd he poked his famous filthy tail with his left arm, the ball was received by the second baseman of the then Mets, the Venezuelan Edgardo Alfonzo.

Also at the event were the Criollos Melvin Mora, Roger Cedeño and Kelvim Escobar, who participated in the game.
