The Battle of the Trenches took place in the city of Valencia, Carabobo state and took place on October 3, 1813; it was an armed action where the forces of New Granada volunteers defeated the royalist supporters of the Spanish Crown.
After the Admirable campaign of Simón Bolívar, western Venezuela was left in the hands of the independence forces, which led the realists to launch an offensive against the city of Valencia, led by 1,600 men commanded by Monteverde.
Revenge for the death of Atanasio Girardot, which occurred three days earlier in the battle of Bárbula, was key to the participation of New Granada volunteers eager to avenge his death.
Bolívar ordered Major Luciano D'Elhuyar, to persecute the royalist forces with a thousand soldiers. He also issued a decree to exalt the memory of the great Girardot, to this end he stated: “A month of mourning, his heart is taken to Caracas and placed in the Cathedral, his remains taken to Antioquia, a battalion will bear his name, the family will enjoy for all his posterity the salary received by the hero of freedom of Venezuela”.
Once they had gained their own realistic terrain, they hunted down the enemy, Monteverde, who locked himself up, wounded, in Puerto Cabello.
After the victory, Bolívar went to Caracas, handing over command of the operations to D'Elhuyar and promoting him to colonel.
