On April 16, 1818, they tried to assassinate El Libertador Simón Bolívar in Rincón de los Toros, Guárico state, a few kilometers from the town of San José de Tiznado, where the Father of the Fatherland had arrived earlier to camp.

During the night of April 16, eight soldiers under the command of Captain Tomás Renovales entered the El Libertador camp and, when discovered, shot into Bolívar's hammock.

“... Ibarra (Bolívar's first aide) returned at the time; I was sitting in my hammock, putting on my boots; Santander was still talking to me; Ibesarra was lying down, when a heavy shock surprised us... General Santander shouted at the same moment: “The enemy!” The few of us who were we started running to the field, abandoning our horses and everything that was in the forest. My hammock, as I later learned, received two or three bullets; I, as I said, was sitting in it, but I didn't receive any injuries, neither did Santander, Ibarra or General Briceño, who were with me; the darkness saved us. The party that greeted us with its fireworks was Spanish... “

Almost immediately came the attack on the camp, where 900 patriots were defeated by about 500 realists, due to the surprise factor.
