206 years ago, Liberator Simon Bolivar was sworn in as president of Venezuela

On February 17, 1819, El Libertador Simón Bolívar was sworn in as president of Venezuela. From that moment on, in official documents, he was given the name of Liberator President of the Republic of Venezuela.

Two days earlier, on February 15, 1819, at the inauguration of the historic Congress of Angostura, the Liberator had expressed in his speech to the congressmen his aspiration for Venezuela: “A government that will make innocence, humanity and peace reign. A government that makes Equality and Freedom triumph, under the rule of inexorable laws. Lord, begin your functions; I have finished mine.”

As proposed by Bolívar, the Congress of Angostura created the Republic of Colombia, historically called Gran Colombia, with the territories of Venezuela, New Granada, for the Cundinamarca era and Ecuador. From that moment on, Bolívar headed his documents as Liberator, although his authority was in fact exercised only in the already free territories of Venezuela and New Granada.
