On February 15, 2009, the Venezuelan people said “Yes” to the proposed constitutional amendment that expanded their right to election and participation, and that opened the way for Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez to achieve his third victory in the presidential election of October 7, 2012.
With 6 million 310 thousand 482 votes (54.85%), the revolutionary forces approved the amendment of articles 160, 162, 174, 192 and 230, in order to allow the immediate re-election of any office of popular election on a continuous basis.
After learning the results , Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez gave his masterful speech where he issued the proclamation that would mark his life.
“Today you have already committed me for life, that's why here on the town's balcony I am completely dedicated to the battle, to continue solving the problems of the people and so that we can continue to build up the Fatherland, I swear, I am dedicated to today, much more fully! , much more completely to the construction of the new Venezuela. And as Saint Paul said, I will consume myself along the way and I will gladly consume myself, because the people deserve it and because in truth, as I tell them, I don't belong to myself, I belong to the people of Venezuela.”
Hugo Chávez, February 15, 2009
